A Place Called Home

Ulysses S. Grant is known as the victorious Civil War general who saved the Union and the 18th President of the United States. Few people know about his rise to fame or his personal life. He first met Julia Dent, his future wife, at her family home, named White Haven. Today, that home commemorates their lives and loving partnership against the turbulent backdrop of the nineteenth century.

Site Development

Progress continues as we work to provide a better visitor experience. The new Visitor Center (pictured at left) opened in February 2005, and exhibits have been installed in the Main House and outbuildings. The historic stable is being rehabilitated for the new interpretive museum, expected to open in early 2007.

Current Construction Activity

Concrete paving for the new parking lot is underway.  This is a multi-stage process, due to the various features (curbs, sidewalks, etc.) as well as the difference in elevations.  Weather also plays a role - usually a bad one!

Critter Campers learn about the historic home from a ranger

Park Completes "Critter Camp" Partnership

On Tuesdays through Fridays, from June through early August 2006, the staff at Ulysses S. Grant NHS worked with a daily dose of "Critter Campers" from neighboring Grant's Farm.  Children, ranging from ages 5-10, attended the camp for four consecutive days, and each day were offered a different segment when they crossed the street to visit the historic site. These activities included a taste of 19th century schooling, a look at farm tools and interactive period games, a house tour, and a unit on the National Park Service.

Each day the flood of around 50 kids would arrive at 12:30 p.m., and a busy half hour would ensue. Though it was indeed a whirlwind of activity, the kids were great to work with, and the park staff enjoyed the opportunity to work with them and the Grant's Farm group leaders.
